Seven Principles for Secure AI: Professor Kai London on Governing AI in Airlines and Banks

Airlines and banks are among the most aggressive adopters of artificial intelligence — for pricing, fraud detection, operations and customer service. That makes them, argues Professor Kai London, a senior CISO, the sectors where AI governance matters most. “Securing AI is not about tools or policies in isolation,” he says. “It is about building a business control system that makes AI defensible, auditable, resilient, governed and commercially trusted.”

The seven principles
London frames secure AI around seven board-legible principles: identity first (every model and agent runs under a managed identity); zero trust by design (assume any input can be hostile); evidence before claims (no audit trail, no assurance); human accountability (a named human owns every consequential decision); data control and lineage (know what trained and grounded the model); resilience by default (contain failures); and board-level governance (AI risk sits with financial and operational risk).
A leadership discipline
“Secure AI is not a technology project. It is a leadership discipline,” London says. The CISO must sit where AI strategy is set, connecting cyber, AI governance, resilience and data control into one operating model — the same integration that emerging regulation such as the EU AI Act and the international AI management standard increasingly require.
Governance as growth
Far from slowing innovation, London insists demonstrable governance is what lets airlines and banks deploy AI in their highest-value, most regulated processes. “The next generation of cyber leadership will be measured by the ability to make AI usable, trustworthy and defensible at scale — and to prove it,” he says.
For sectors racing to adopt AI, London's message is that the winners will not be the boldest experimenters but the institutions that built the control system to govern intelligence as carefully as they govern money and safety.
